Welcome to Stromness RBL Pipe Band web site. We are delighted to unveil our new site which has been entirely
constructed by members within the band. The Stromness Pipe Band is more than just a Pipe Band of course, with many
multi-instrumentalists wtihin the ranks and many close links to various other music groups and artists in Orkney.
Drum Major Ewan Sinclair leading the Stromness RBL Pipe Band around the field at the 2012 Pitlochry Highland Games.
The band was formed in 1980 through the enthusiasm of the late Bill Baillie, an Occidental Oil Company
employee on the Flotta Oil Terminal. The band's membership initially came from the Flotta workforce and
took the name Occidental Pipe Band, and then later the Claymore Pipe Band, after one of the oilfields supplying
Flotta. The band then extended its recruitment beyond the workforce and obtained new sponsorship from the Stromness
branch of the Royal British Legion in 1985, and therefore took on the present name.
